HEALTH

Medical Insurance | Public Health Services

Make sure that you come to Israel with medical travel insurance. Check out with your insurance before you arrive whether or not you need to go to any specific clinic to receive medical assistance in order to receive coverage.

If you need medical assistance, you can call Terem (see telephone services).

In general, if you have insurance from abroad, first you will probably have to pay the bill. With your receipt, you can request reimbursement when you return home.
The medical system in Israel is different from what many people may be used to. It is socialized, meaning it is government-run. As a result, citizens pre-pay for medical care and when a doctor is needed the visit is (for the most part) free.

The weather, especially during the day in the spring and summer, can be very hot. Make sure to keep drinking fluids. The water in Israel is of good quality and fine to drink. Israeli water has a high mineral content. If you prefer bottled water, assorted brands are available everywhere at snack bars, supermarkets and grocery stores.

HOLIDAYS

Skiing on Mount Hermon

If you feel like getting away from it all for a weekend, a trip to the snowy north is just what you need. If you’re an experienced skier, Mount Hermon is not going to offer anything too challenging, but it is snow covered and on a clear day the scenery is superb. If you are a complete novice, haven’t been on the slopes for a while or just naturally ski like a duck, you’ll make plenty of friends on the slopes.

From Jerusalem, driving up the Jordan Valley and on past the Galilee, it’s roughly a 4 hour drive.

On Arrival

You’ll be stopped at a ticket booth before you reach the car park where you pay to get onto the mountain. If you say you are staying in the Moshav, the charge drops from NIS 35 per person to NIS 20 per person.

Ski and boot hire is around NIS150 per person, while snowboard hire is closer to NIS 200. Lift passes for a full day are NIS 180 and NIS 140 for a half day. There is a small shop beside the ski hire selling gloves, glasses, jackets etc – but if you still have the salopettes (and matching ear muffs) you bought in 1978, you’ll fit right in.

There is a sledging park and a non-skier chairlift if anyone in your party isn’t ready for the complete experience.

Where to stay

The nearby Moshav, Neve Ativ, has a large selection of decent guest houses which generally don’t need to be booked in advance.

One is Karen’s Zimmer  www.zimmer.co.il/marom  06-698-5855.

A room sleeping  up to 6 people is around NIS 700.

This holiday was recommended by Jennifer Griffin.

Thanks Jennifer.
